The following video will model the INACSL Standards of Best Practice (BP) for the facilitation of simulations. Use the resources below to identify aspects of the pre-brief, simulation scenario and debrief, and reflect on the questions asked. The video is 43 minutes long with three sections – pre-brief, scenario and debrief. You have several options for completing the activities below – watch the video and do the activities in part, go back  and review it more than once, take time to reflect on the video and BP.

INACSL Standards of Best Practice in Action!

Simulation Facilitation Activity
  1. Pre-Brief: As you watch the pre-brief use the  Pre-brief Checklist to identify aspects of the pre-brief that the facilitator reviews. Did the facilitator include everything? Is there anything that you would have added and why? Are there any changes you would have included if you were doing a pre-brief for a virtual simulation experience?
  2. Simulation Scenario: As you watch the simulation scenario identify any cues given to the learners by the patient. Would you have cued the learner’s differently, or added a cue – how, when and why? Write down notes of things you would want to review with learners during the debrief.
  3. Debrief: As you watch the debrief use the Debriefing Phases to identify the different phases of the debrief. Write out a PAILL for something you identified during the simulation scenario in the previous step – that you want to discuss with learners, to uncover their “frames” for what guided their actions.
  4. Reflective questions: What are your thoughts on how the facilitator integrated the observers into the debrief? Would you have done anything differently – why or why not? How did the observers contribute to the debrief? When the facilitator used PAILL to uncover learner’s “frames” would you have worded things differently -why and how?  What will you take away from this experience and integrate into your practice?
