Simulation is a form of experiential learning,  for this type of learning to be effective, and maybe even transformative, attention needs to be paid to all aspects of the learning cycle.

Explore Camosun College’s Applied Learning Model (based on the Eight Principles of Good Practice for All Experiential Learning Activities) to understand the cycle of learning.

The first 4 principles are focused on preparation AKA  simulation design, while the the latter 4 principles are related to student experience,  AKA simulation facilitation and debriefing.

In healthcare, simulation is imperative – for patient safety!

The following standards of best practice developed by the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) are helpful guides in designing simulations – INACSL_SBP_Design_2016

…and facilitating and debriefing  simulations  – INACSL_SBP_Facilitation_2016, INACSL_SBP_Debriefing_2016.

These standards are widely used by many healthcare professionals other than nursing.
